Phil Hughes to be Offered in Package for Johan
According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees have finally decided to offer up Phil Hughes in their package deal for Twins ace Johan Santana. The Yankees had been reluctant to offer either Joba or Hughes in any past package for Johan, it seems, but the thought of the Red Sox possibly getting Santana likely drove ol’ Hank Steinbrenner over the edge.
The Red Sox and Dodgers still remain viable trade partners, but Santana has a full no-trade clause, and the rumor is that his preference is to play for the Yankees (probably because he knows they will pay him the best!!).
My guess is that the Yankees offer is now Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and Austin Jackson, but the rumor is Hughes/Melky/lesser pitching prospect. Either way, maybe the Yanks are in the process of negotiating with Santana on a long-term deal right now?

Don’t trade Phil,he’s the Yankees future!!
Yeah, but it seems Hank has made up his mind. It’s almost like he hid Cashman in the basement…
Does this seem like a fleecing on the Yankees part? I mean Phil Hughes is nice, but he didnt exactly impress this year, Melky Cabrera is so average once he leaves New York, and then a prospect is a prospect. To me this is almost Phil Hughes for Santana straight up. Twins better hope Hughes is the stud people say he is.. and Austin Jackson or Tabata is the other player.. and a stud as well. Just doesn’t seem like enough to me.
I agree, Tyler. Hughes is a prospect, a very good one at that. That being said, you have to give something to get “the best pitcher in baseball”…who is lefty..and is not even 30 years old yet. Hughes and Melky, with a AA prospect? Is that enough? I don’t know, but if I am the Yankees, I pull the trigger in a heartbeat.
[…] Don’t count out the New York Yankees either, as they have told Rowand and his agent that they would be interested should they include Melky Cabrera in a deal for Johan Santana. That scenario is becoming close to a reality today, as reported earlier. […]
I mean Buster Olney has to be the biggest and most unrealistic
Yankees fans in the world… Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, and NOT one of their top prospects? Are you serious.. I laugh at this
if im the Twins.. I compare this to when the Marlins and Rangers announced the outlines of a trade, a fleecing of the Marlins on the Rangers part.. We hesitated and the Sox came in and gave an awesome deal to the Marlins.. Someone will step up with a better deal, watch and see.
lol Buster updated his story on espn.com. Changed it from not a top prospect in the minors!!, yes there were exclamation points , to Not one of their very best young players.. Kennedy, Cano or Joba. Still if im the Twins, its Hughes, Kennedy and Jackson or see ya.
