Motown Mauls the Marlins
In what will probably be the biggest deal in baseball this offseason, MLB.com is reporting that the Detroit Tigers have acquired BOTH Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis from the Marlins for SP Andrew Miller and OF Cameron Maybin, along with 4 other minor leaguers. The names of those players are not available at this time.
Wow…what a deal, but in the end, to get 2 players like Cabrera and Willis is a huge score for a team like Detroit. Maybin and Miller are both big-time prospects, but Cabrera is a top-10 offensive player in the game already and is still a kid. Can Maybin ever become Cabrera? I have my doubts.
Willis is a tad overrated, I think. He struggled really badly this past season and has kinda been on the decline after he bursted on the scene, but if he can ever put it together again, both he and Justin Verlander will be a nice 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. Miller was a promising youngster and will likely be a pretty good SP for the Marlins, especially in the weaker NL.
In the end, I think the Marlins got a decent package, but would have been a lot better trading these 2 in seperate deals to get the biggest return for their buck. Depending on the 4 players acquired along with Maybin and Miller, this could be a nice fleece delivered by ex-Marlin GM Dave Dombrowski….
Stay tuned…
Update: Peter Gammons reports that 1 of the 4 other players is C Mike Rabelo.

Wow! Guess this means the Angels can offer the most for Johan, if they wanted.
The Marlins got some great prospects here. But Detroit just got nasty. Granderson, Polanco, Cabrera, Ordonez, Sheffield, etc. Damn son.
Not to mention Bonderman, Verlander, Willis as a 1-2-3. Not bad!
simply stunning. i wish dave dombrowski was my general manager.
Wow… that AL Central is getting pretty serious. There’s certainly going to be some -real- contendors for the Wild Card this season.
