Kazmir Won’t Be Fleeced!

Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitcher Scott Kazmir does not seem to interested on signing a long-term deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to the St. Petersburg Times. With 2 years left until he hits the open market, it would be wise for Tampa Bay to explore signing him now and buying out some of those free agent years, but Kazmir does not seem to be interested.

Kazmir would enter the market (if healthy) in 2009 as a dominant lefty with a good 6-7 prime years left in the tank. Sounds like a HUGE payday to me, so Kazmir is smart to not get fleeced by the Rays. However, a guy like Kazmir, who has been expected to break down at some point due to his build, might want to get some dough now, just in case he does hit the skids.

On a positive note, the Montgomery Biscuits (Tampa Bay’s Minor League team) raised over $12,000 for the Alexander Montoyo Fund, which was created to help the infant son of Durham Bulls AAA Manager and former Biscuits Manager Charlie Montoyo. Montoyo’s son was born with a heart defect and has undergone 2 heart surgeries already. Classy move by the minor league team. All the best to the family.

  1. Yea, it’s a tough spot for Kazmir. He’d be smart to take as much guaranteed money as possible because of his injury concerns. But if he can just stay healthy for the next two seasons, he will be in prime fleece position. Interesting.

  2. PS: Montgomery Biscuits? What a terrible team name. ha.

  3. Wow, interesting indeed. With his health issues, it makes this an extremely intruiging storyline. My guess is that the Rays are low-balling the sh*t out of him.
