Introducing the Homer Award
MLB Fleece Factor would like to introduce a new feature to our ever-growing MLB rumor site. It’s called, “The Homer Award.”
To be a “Homer” is to be such a fierce and zealous follower of a team or player (usually the “home” team and/or it’s players, but not necessarily), that the homer’s judgement is too often clouded by this insane and rather silly devotion that they find themselves making outlandish comments about their “homer” obsession. Think Michael Kay (announcer/homer for the Yankees) and his blinding love for all things pinstripe, Joe Morgan (a homer of himself and the 1975 Reds) and his belief that only former players can comment on the game of baseball, Susan Waldmyn (another Yankee homer/announcer) and her obnoxious tears of joy for alleged cheater Roger Clemens, etc.
So in ”The Homer Award” section of this website, the Fleece Factor crew will award those individuals - whether it be players, announcers or writers - who make incredibly irrational statements based on their undying and insane devotion to a certain team or player. We would appreciate and encourage all of our viewers to submit nominations in the comments or through email (MLBFleeceFactor@Gmail.com).

I would like to personally nominate Yankee radio play-by-play man John Sterling and his cry of “The Yankees Win! THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANNNNKEES WIN!” for a Homer. During the 2004 ALCS, whenever the Red Sox (not a Sox fan, by the way) hit a home run, Sterling would unenthusiastically say, “And it’s, uh, a home run, for David Ortiz, um, yeah.” However, on an A-Rod homer, Sterling stands up and screams, “AN A-BOMB! FOR A-ROD!” It’s so absurd.

Sterling’s definitely a homer, no doubt. As the season approaches, we will look for particular quotes of his to nominate.
Awesome idea! Joe Morgan, Michael Kay and John Sterling could win a daily award for this.
Don’t forget Mike Francesca, who seems to spew out whatever rumors he hears as fact, especially when its good for the Yankees or bad for the Red Sox/Mets.
Oh! And Chip Caray. Every now and then I’ll find myself forced to watch a Mets-Braves game on TBS, and there are few things I can think of that are more unpleasant than listening to Caray’s oh-so-blatant homerism. Gary Cohen may not be the most objective guy in sports broadcasting, but he’s miles past Caray.
Hark Harelson. I win.
Ahem, make that Hawk Harelson
I don’t know if it’s fair or not, but the TBS and WGN commentators should be held to a different standard than the non-nationally aired stations. They are representing their teams –nationally-. Think about it… the NFL usually uses the same set or sets of commentators for the games and they rarely show bias… for a reason… they want EVERYBODY to watch their games. Why is this a good business decision for the Braves, White Sox, and Cubs? I hated watching the Sox in WGN when I was a kid.
“Good Guys 10… Bad Guys 2… Yeeeees!!!!
We don’t get WGN here in NYC so I don’t catch those Cubs games, but when I was upstate at school I caught a few of them and I agree wholeheartedly. It just seems plain old intuitive that nationally broadcast television should be held to higher standards than that of a local cable network, and yet I totally find the guys on TBS to be much more weighted towards their teams, at least than the guys on SNY and even YES. On SNY its expected that they bring you Mets information because, well, they’re owned by the Mets and they’re in direct competition with another local cable network owned by the Yankees. And even still, I always get the sense they’re much more interested in what the opposition has and what they’re doing well than the guys on TBS. The only complaint I can really figure is that Gary Cohen screams “ITS OUTTA HERE!” on a Mets HR and just kinda says it when someone else hits one. TBS may share ownership with the Braves, but its hardly the focus of their broadcasting lineup.

How about that for some sort of non-homer award. Not too many national broadcasters would go to this length to do their job better, let alone local ones. I have a ton of respect for Ron Darling, both as a pitcher and an analyst. If more people took this kind of example, the average baseball fan would be much more well informed. This just gives me another reason to be excited about watching baseball in 2008, I’m sure Ronnie will have a ton of great and insightful stuff to say.
