More on the Konerko to Angels Rumor
The Daily Breeze is now confirming that the Angels and Chicago White Sox are, in fact, discussing a trade that would send Paul Konerko to the Angels. The Breeze reports that Howie Kendrick, Chone Figgins and Ervin Santana are all possible candidates to head to Chicago.
Trading Figgins for Konerko makes tremendous sense for Chicago (that point was made late last night at the Factor), and some sense for LA. So maybe that trade rumor will grow some legs. (Not to toot our own horn, but that swap was speculated here at the Fleece Factor on December 13th).
If prized second base prospect Howie Kendrick is involved, however, this becomes an absolute fleece for the White Sox. I can’t imagine why the Angels would trade a player with the potential of Howie Kendrick (whom they’ve refused to part with in the past) for Paul Konerko, when they already have Casey Kotchman to man 1st base. The marginal increase of Konerko over Kotchman is simply not enough to justify trading away a potential All-Star in Kendrick.

I can see this deal getting done for Figgins. Throw in Kotchman and Crede and this gets good. However, I think the Angels might push for Inge if they can get Konerko.
LA should offer Matthews, Santana and maybe Kotchman at the most.
Konerko is good, but Kotchman is adequate at 1B. The need simply isn’t that great for LA to risk getting fleeced.
Kenny Williams = A GENIUS if he gets Kotchman or Kendrick for Konerko.
Go Sox!
Plus, Konerko in the Angels lineup makes the middle of that lineup way too right handed. (Vlad, Konerko, Hunter).
