Rockies, Marcus Giles Agree to a Deal

As per Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Moutain News, the Colorado Rockies and free agent 2B Marcus Giles have agreed to terms on a non-guaranteed contract.  Apparently, the deal will not be finalized until Giles passes a physicial, and the team won’t discuss the terms of the contract until then.  Giles, 29, hit a putrid .229 last season for the San Diego Padres, while “slugging” 4 HR’s and adding 30 RBI in 116 games played.  He is however, as noted within the piece, a career .277 hitter.

Jayson Nix, an in-house rookie, still appears to be the starting 2B for the Rox next season.  Clint Barmes, Omar Quintanilla, Ian Stewart and Jeff Baker all have an outside shot at making the team at second base as well.
