Joe Crede Rumor Update: San Fran Bound?

UPDATE: (1/30) 12:10pm (EST) - The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that the Giants “may even have a deal in place with the Sox, contingent on the back recovery (of Crede).” The paper says a deal may be made during Spring Training, but provides no insight on a return package.

Jan 23, 9:34am (EST): As the White Sox continue to tinker with their roster by bringing in Octavio Dotel, one situation remains unclear: Third base.

Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune checks in today with an update.  All along, it appeared the goal was to move incumbent Joe Crede - due to his back problems - and give the full-time job to Josh Fields.  That plan doesn’t appear to have changed.  In fact, Crede’s new salary may have helped out the ChiSox.  Writes Gonzales, “Crede’s $5.15 million contract is very affordable to teams seeking a sure-handed third baseman with run producing ability.”

Gonzales mentions the San Francisco Giants as a possible partner.  The Giants, of course, have seen talks with their incumbent - Pedro Feliz - stall.  (They should be thanking their lucky stars for that).   Crede would definitely be an upgrade over the offensively offensive Feliz, though he would still leave much to be desired in terms of getting on base.  Gonzales hints at a possible Noah Lowry swap.  Such a swap, however, would be a complete fleece for the White Sox.  Lowry, only 27, has a career 4.03 ERA in 618 career major league innings and is signed through 2009 (with a club option for 2010) at very affordable rates.   I would imagine Chicago would have to throw in a pretty decent prospect to make that trade work.  Unless Brian Sabean wants another fleece for his wardrobe.

  1. Yeah, giving up a young SP (Lowry) for a 1-year rental isn’t the best course of action. However, it does make the team older, and Brian Sabean might be open to that…

  2. Sabean is a dumb #$%, why not sign Feliz for a year, two or even three. NO he would rather give up a pitcher then pull out his check book. Feliz has done everything possible for the Giants, he was a catcher for an inning when Boachy took out his starting catcher then Alfonso got hurt in the 9th so Feliz had to catch. Pay him Brian!

But until something happens he’s on the ballclub.” The Giants seem like a possible destination, as the team has also been rumored to be interested in White Sox 3B Joe Crede. […]
