No Home for Bonds?

UPDATE: (1/31) 9:21PM (EST) - As per Ken Rosenthal of Foxsports, Bonds’ agent Jeff Boris says his client is “unequivocally not retiring.” Boris went on to decline comment when asked if he was speaking to any particular teams in regards to his client.

UPDATE: (1/30) 1:51pm (EST) - As per Cliff Corcoran of SI.com, there are 7 “likely destinations” for Bonds: Yankees, Mets, Indians, Mariners, Rangers, Astros and Padres. He feels that the Padres are the best overall fit for his large head, with the Rangers as the best AL destination.

Jan 27, 8:41am (EST) - According to Janie McCauley of the AP, and courtesy of Yahoo! Sports, we learn that Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane has reiterated that the signing of Barry Bonds, who is a free agent, is not in his team’s plans. He stressed that the A’s are continuing their movement toward youth and development… and it would make sense that a 43-year old outfielder wouldn’t exactly fit that description.

Obviously, the whole media circus that currently surrounds Bonds in his perjury and obstruction of justice charges likely has something to do with Beane’s comments. Back in November of 2007, the team actually was interested in Bonds.  But hey, I don’t think anyone can blame the A’s organization for their change of heart. I doubt any team wants that kind of distraction in their clubhouse, and dominating Spring Training headlines.

Will Bonds find a home for the 2008 season at all? My guess is that it isn’t very likely at all.

  1. Eh, Pads could use a LF I guess. And the Rangers love juicers. Mets and Yankees? No.

  2. Cliff needs to settle down here…

Likely Destinations? or places Cliff thinks he might be decent fit? Pretty big difference…

  3. Wow. If the Mets get Bonds, they will match the Yankees in payroll obnoxiousness AND steroids. Hilarious.

  4. If Mets sign Bonds, I’ll reapply for Yankee Fan status………

  5. “Reapply?” Wow.

  6. If the Phillies had a bigger ballpark, Bonds might be a good fit there…. Well, his head, anyway.

  7. He could change his name to Bondo and be used on a fill-in basis in case someone else in the lineup gets banged up. ;P

  8. the great thing about the circus at shea with a bonds signing will be the shutting up of the media by may 15th when the mets are 10 games up in first place…the met fans boo everyone till you make things happen…by april 25th the booing will stop and by may 15th the 50K plus will be giving him a standing o everytime he comes to the plate…met fans just want a winner…didn’t they boo beltran…and now ????

120 wins with bonds and sosa platooning in right…yes in right…

  9. Bonds AND Sosa? haha Seriously?

  10. yes seriously ? I am sure you would rather have a team powered by scutaro and green, with a little bit of george foster thrown in to get us up to 76 wins per year…or maybe jim fregosi… yes babu, they will commit 30 errors leading to17 runs over the course of a season and let 24 hits drop in that others would catch which will lead to 10 runs and will misplay 20 singles into doubles which will allow another 10 runs to score. Then they will hit over 40 home runs, knock in 130 rbi’s and bat over 300. Plus their hitting will add an additional 15 points to the batting averages of the people on both sides of them and stress the crap out of the rest of the pitchers in the league who will not be too happy to have a mets murderers row to face every game…and the media circus will add up to extra untold millions in sales of licensed t-shirts, etc for the next 2 years. so yeah babu, I am deadly serious

  11. 130 RBI from the RF spot you say? Interesting, babu.
