Yankees sign Morgan Ensberg

According to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, the New York Yankees and free agent infielder Morgan Ensberg have agreed to a 1-year minor-league contract. Ensberg will compete in Spring Training for the 1B job, with Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit. Jason Giambi, because of his atrocious defense, will likely serve as the main DH for the team, and spend less time at first than the others.
Ensberg has played the majority of his career at third base. In 115 games last season, he hit .230, with 12 homers and 39 runs batted in. Back in 2005 for the Astros, Ensberg hit 36 HR’s and drove in 101 runs.

Ensberg is terrible. Talk about a guy on the juice…
I disagree. I think this is a good flyer on a guy with excellent OBP skills and serious platoon possibilities (Ensberg historically wears out lefties). A one year minor league contract for a guy who only a few years ago was an All Star, and can back you up at 1B and 3B is, to me, a no brainer. If Ensberg really is done, the Yanks will find out in Spring Training and cost them about as much as Hank spends for dinner on an average weekend.
Wow! Way to take the wind out of the Mets’ sails!
Fred, Agreed. I mean, why not? He can provide insurance at 1B and 3B, and he’s a right handed stick. It was a decent move by the Yanks, low-cost, potential “reward”.
