Yankees Win Arbitration with Wang

According to MLB.com, Yankees staff ace Chien-Ming Wang lost his arbitration case, and solidified a “W” for the New York
Yankees. As noted in this piece, players are now 0-for-4 in cases that have been decided. Big score for the owners.
Wang had requested $4.6 million for the upcoming season, but was instead awarded $4 million by arbitrators. This was Wang’s first year of eligibility. He has won 19 games for the Yankees 2 years in a row now.

So the Yankees, them of the $200+ million payroll, couldn’t spend another $600,000 on their ace? I hate the Yankees so much
Yeah, pretty bad. And then tell him now’s not the right time to seek an extension, after giving one to Cano.
Why would you extend a pitcher when there are still years of arbitration left? Wang was solid for two year, but there were a lot of questions raised last season with his pitching.
A position player is different. Injuries can happen with any player, but position players are less likely to have career limiting injuries.
Wang still got a good sized raise, and it puts him into a high area for his length of service.
I really don’t see the problem with this move. If Wang performs again, then its more likely that he will get his deal.
Remember, Riveria went to an arbitration hearing with the Yankees and lost. It didn’t seem to hurt him, now did it?
I have to agree here, it has nothing to do with Wang ’s performance, he was VERY good (guess where he rank amoung AL starters in the last two year in combined winshare…. 5th! )
But the issue is clear that pitchers are always riskier and also that Wang is a bit old for when he enter the league so he won’t be in his late 20s when he reaches FA. there’s certainly a reasonable chance that he’s best years will all come during his controlled year.
