Astros sign Shawn Chacon

According to Alyson Footer at MLB.com, the Houston Astros and free-agent pitcher Shawn Chacon have agreed on a 1-year contract, worth $2 million. The deal also includes performance incentives.

Chacon will compete this spring for a spot in the starting rotation, but is versatile enough to pitch out of the bullpen as well. That makes him a very good signing for a team like the Astros, who can use help in either role.

We have hinted here at Fleece Factor just 2 days ago that both sides were extremely close on an agreement. Chacon apparently turned down more lucrative offers from other clubs to sign in Houston. Said Astros GM Ed Wade, “Shawn gives us another experienced arm to add to our mix. I know that he had better financial packages out there, but Shawn thinks we can win, and he wants to be part of what we have here. We’ll put him into the competition for a spot in the rotation and let him battle it out. We know that he can help us in some role in 2008.

Chacon thinks the Astros can WIN? What, 65-70 games? C’mon, Shawn.

  1. I am no big fan of Chacon, but at that price I would take the man. Solid signing for Ed Wade. But too little, too late.

  2. yeah, not a horrible signing in relative context. but the Astros are still screwed.

  3. I guess by thinking they could win Chacon means that they could win more then the Pirates… which i don’t doubt, but just about 29 other teams can win more then the Pirates

  4. Good signing for the price for more pitching depth. 65-70 wins YOU C’mon man!! I think the ‘Stros will surprise this year, mark my words!! It’s the NL Central anyone but the pirates has a shot!! Better offense and defense and I think the starters will surprise next year, especially with Jennings gone.

  5. The Cards dont have a shot either.
