Mets Rumors: Delgado gets MRI, Anderson/Church Collision

UPDATE (3/1) 8:30pm (EST) - According to rotoworld.com , Delgado’s MRI came back negative, as it appears as though he has an “impingement of the right hop”. He is considered day-to-day. Ryan Church was diagnosed with a “Grade 2 concussion”. This will most likely keep Church out “at least” 2 weeks. He has time to get ready for opening day, but you might see Endy Chavez out in RF for the Mets the first week or two of the regular season.

Mar 1, 4:09pm (EST) - According to Marty Noble at MLB.com, Carlos Delgado, the New York Mets’ slugging first baseman, flew back to New York today for an MRI on his hip. The MRI was to see if the pain was the result of his hip flexor, the same injury that kept him out last September. Just last month, Delgado had said there were no lingering effects from his hip injury last year. So this news is most unwelcome, obviously.

As if the Delgado MRI news wasn’t bad enough, his replacement at 1B today, Marlon Anderson, collided with RF Ryan Church while the pair were going after a fly ball. Both were taken out of the game and brought to a local hospital. Church has a concussion as a result, and Anderson has a sore jaw and a bruised chest.

  1. Here comes Hatteberg, on his pony, riding on his big fat pony…

I guess we can say goodbye to John Niese. And he looked good today. Rats.

  2. Haha, give Michel a shot! He got that 9th inning rally started.

Rotoworld is saying the MRI on Delgado was negative, but they also don’t like his chances of holding up well this season.

I agree that Hatteberg is the most likely candidate considering what the Mets have to offer, but they should at least to try and fleece Jim Bowden back for Nick Johnson. I’m a big Abreu fan though. I want to see what he can do. He’s not young, but he seems to have a nice, short but powerful stroke. Plus the Mets could probably ride him for a couple years at first, until he reaches the age Delgado is now. It would save them some money to focus on pitching and left field next offseason.

Church sounds a little worse, they’re saying he may miss two weeks. If he’s not ready for opening day, Endy Chavez better be. My guess is Angel Pagan and Brady Clark would have to be their replacements, but I doubt Clark has any options left, so that would hurt their depth a bit. Can you imagine if Fernando Martinez was the opening day RF? He’d have to have a ridiculous Spring, but if neither Chavez or Church is ready and Pagan is awful, could it be conceivable?

  3. It’s funny. You’d think an MRI that didn’t find anything wrong would be called “positive”, not negative.
