Beckett Scratched from His Start; Still Hurting

UPDATE: (3/11) 2:36pm (EST) - Beckett tells the Globe’s Amalie Benjamin today that he is, “Better today than I was yesterday. I got a good night’s sleep.”  He’s still questionable to make the team’s trip to Japan later this month.

UPDATE: (3/10) 11:22pm (EST) - According to Boston.com, Beckett is pessimistic about pitching the opener for the Red Sox. He had trouble sleeping due to back discomfort Sunday night. An MRI ruled out any major issues, but this is not a good sign. Hopefully he feels better in coming days.

UPDATE: (3/9) 4:02pm (EST) - As per The Boston Globe, Terry Francona said that Beckett “looked way better than we expected” this morning. Red Sox fans can breathe a deep sigh of relief now.

UPDATE: (3/8) 6:52pm (EST) - According to the Boston Herald, Beckett will be re-evaluated tomorrow. There is concern as to how ”significant” this condition could be. It is uncertain when Beckett will make his next start.

Mar 8, 2:08pm (EST) - As per Amalie Benjamin of The Boston Globe, Josh Beckett was warming up on the mound for his start today, when he appeared to grab his back after a warmup pitch, and then came off the field. Later, they said Beckett had slipped on the mound. The early reports are that he has back spasms, but a more detailed injury report should be coming soon.

Clearly, the Red Sox are keeping their fingers crossed here that this injury isn’t any more serious than just mild spasms, and removing him might have just been precautionary. Either way, Manny Delcarmen started in Beckett’s place.
