Red Sox Release Mirabelli

The Boston Red Sox have released backup catcher Doug Mirabelli, according to the Boston Herald.  This, after the Red Sox signed him to a $550K deal just two months ago.

Tim Wakefield’s personal knuckle-ball catcher will presumably be replaced by Kevin Cash on the roster.  Cash, 30, is another light hitting defensive catcher and was able to handle the knuckler pretty well last season when Mirabelli was on the disabled list.

Mirabelli spent 5 and half seasons with the Red Sox in two different stints.  His best year came in 2004, when he hit .281/.368/.525 in 160 at-bats.  His offense has been horrendous ever since, though.  He has handed in batting averages of .228, .191, and .202 over the last three years.

  1. a. do a look back on the Mirabelle - Bard + Meredeth trade

    b. someone should sign him just in case Cash bomb or get hurt :P (espically the Yankees. as they could just laugh and watch as the Red Sox can’t pitch Wakefield or is forced to use Vartiek to catch him)

  2. I’m gonna try to do “A Look Back” on this one soon. Good call.

  3. And I was thinking the same thing about the Yanks signing Mirabelli.

But his bat must be REALLY slow this spring for Boston to think Cash is now the better hitter.
