Blue Jays Near Deal with OF Alex Rios

UPDATE: (3/31) 2:55pm (EST) - As per the Toronto Globe and Mail, Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi told reporters that he is extending the team’s self-imposed deadline by a few days so that the team can complete their deal with Rios. Ricciardi said the two sides are extremely close right now.

Mar 25, 9:28am (EST) - According to Ken Rosenthal, the Toronto Blue Jays are nearing a 6-year extension with outfielder Alex Rios. The deal is expected to be worth close to $65 million, with a club option for 2015 that could bring the total value closer to $80 million. The deal would buy-out Rios’ next two arbitration years, and cover him through his first four years of free agency.

Rios, 27, has been an All-Star in each of the last two seasons. His power has increased year-over-year, and last year he established career highs in HR (24), RBI (85), SB (17), and OBP (.354). For just under $11 million annually, this is a solid deal for the Blue Jays.

  1. Wow…..bad move by Rios in my opinion.

  2. Bad move to guaruntee yourself over $10+ million per season for 6 years at the age of 27? I mean, I “guess” he could have gotton $11 or 12….but I mean, how greedy are we getting here? Guy’s hooked up for life.

  3. Why not sign a 3/30, hit free agency, and grab a huge contract at age 30 to end your career?

  4. $10 mill a season is not “huge”? Whose to say the market will remain the same over the next four-five years? After the 2000 season when the market exploded…it came back down to earth. Right now, the market is “up”. Take the money while you can be assured it’s there. No guaruntee at age 30 he could grab 4 years for say $60 million…especially with risk of injury, etc. I think it was a nice ball by both parties.

  5. Agreed, Mr. Fleece. He’s still set for life.

  6. Baaah….you guys are the type of guys that would make a deal with the banker on that box gameshow with Howie Mandel.

  7. Does he have two years of arbitration left? I thought he had been around longer than that.

  8. Maybe he’s not greedy.Maybe Ten million a year is good enough for him.
