Yankees Worth Over $1.3 Billion

In keeping with today’s trend of dollar signs, Yahoo Sports! released a piece today (citing Forbes magazine) detailing how much each major-league franchise is worth. No real shocker that the Yankees were at the top of that list, valued at $1.306 billion, a rise of 9 percent from the previous year. The Bronx Bombers were listed as having $327 million in revenue last year. Must be nice…

The New York Mets were second, worth around $824 million, and the Boston Red Sox were third with a value of $816 million. Both New York teams will increase their overall revenues as they move into new stadiums in 2009. Ah, the rich get richer I suppose.

The bottom 3 teams are: Pittsburgh Pirates ($292), Tampa Bay Rays ($290 million) and the Florida Marlins ($256 million).

  1. That’s a lot of cash $$$ for certain and old daddy George really made this team worth what it is. What are the odds that sons Hanky and Spanky will devalue this proud team? It was one thing for George, whom understood the goings on of baseball to some degree to over ride his GM, but these 2 seem to have the “Peter Angelos” ego problem and also as little baseball knowledge as him to boot when it comes to overiding what is needed to fix the needs of a team.

  2. Possibly, but the one advantage the Yankees have over every team (except the Mets) is that they have the largest market in the nation to draw on.

So even if Hank screws up the personnel of this team, the overall value of the team probably won’t suffer too much because of the revenue potential that comes from being located in New York.
