Braves’ Moylan Might Be Lost for Season

UPDATE: (4/17) 10:21pm (EST) - As per David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Moylan will likely need reconstructive elbow surgery, and would miss the rest of the season. A final decision won’t be made for 2 more weeks, however. Obviously not great news for Braves’ fans.

Apr 15, 9:04pm (EST) - Braves reliever Peter Moylan will join closer Rafael Soriano on the DL. Word out of Atlanta says Moylan has experienced soreness in his right elbow. Manny Acosta now becomes the favorite to close with the two top-arms on the DL. There is no word as to how serious the injured elbow is.

This is another blow to the Atlanta bullpen. Bobby Cox will hope Acosta and Blaine Boyer can get the job done until Soriano or Moyer is able to return.

  1. When it rains, it pours.

Meanwhile, over in Pittsburgh. Tyler Yates has posted an ERA of 1.00 in nine innings of work.

Who should I give the dunce cap to, Bobby Cox or Roger McDowell?

  2. Neither, I’d say.

Bobby Cox is one of the game’s best managers….and McDowell has already lost three key guys from his staff in Soriano, Moylan, and Hampton.

Although, I hear Leo Mazzone is doing analysis now for FOX or something? That’s kind of weird, how is that guy not in someone’s dugout? He’s tremendous.

  3. I heard that Mazzone is working for a rocking chair company. Is this not true? :)

  4. My Braves are now 0-7 im one run games this season after Wednesday nights 6-5 loss to the Marlins.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

It sounds like Peter Moylan might be out for the season.

Tim Hudson was pulled after just three innings complaining of a dead arm and his velocity was down to around 85-86 MPH.

Which is almost the same symptoms experienced by Mike Gonzalez before T.J. surgery sidelined him last season.

    This cannot be good.

  5. Well, their offense MASHED tonight, that’s a good, at least. Back-Back-Back bombs.

  6. Yes, I watched the game and it was fun.

But I was more impressed by the zero runs, three hits and sixteen strike out effort put forth by the pitching.

Once Teixeira starts mashing consistently, both him and Chipper will be impossible to contain.

After 15 games I see two keys that will make or break the Braves season.

The health of the starting pitching which so far has an ERA of 3.57 with five quality starts.

And the effectiveness of that bullpen. It has an ERA of 4.67 , two saves, four losses and five blown saves.

  7. Atlanta has the potential to be the best offense in the division (and that includes the Phillies). While Howard, Utley, Rollins and Burrell are clearly better than their Brave counterparts, the difference between Howard and Teixeira (and the other Phils vs. Braves at 2B, SS and LF) is not as great as the advantage the Braves have with McCann vs. Ruiz, Chipper vs. Feliz (MLB Fleece’s favorite player), and Francoeur vs. Jenkins (I consider Kotsay and Victorino pretty much of a wash). The only question for both squads will be pitching, and the loss of Moylan for the season is very bad. As a Met fan, I watched my team’s season disintegrate because of a compromised bullpen last season. And for the Mets to succeed, they will need their pitching to be head-and-shoulders above the Phils and Braves (I rate the Mets’ lineup third in the division). Should be an interesting (if so far injury plagued) season.
