Hell’s ANGEL…Hernandez

So I am sitting here this Friday afternoon, reading multiple team’s site’s and blogs, and I have stumbled across some interesting tidbits from last night’s Mets’ game (which I did not see, so what I am writing is not a first-hand account). Apparently, the worst umpire in the history of major league baseball, Angel Hernandez, was at his ‘ole tricks once again. We get a closer look at last night’s incident at Pick Me Up Some Mets!. Here is the story, as they broke it down:
“After Hernandez insufficiently called an out at 1st, Carlos Delgado seemed to offer a justified complaint. The camera then showed Hernandez cursing out Delgado, calling him a “piece of s**t,” when Hernandez was obviously the one in the wrong. Again”.
Now, I have watched a number of games throughout the years, involving different clubs, different leagues, etc. In each game I have seen with Angel as an umpire, he has blown AT LEAST one call, if not many more. He adversely impacts every game he “works”. He is smug, confrontational with both players and managers, and apparently we can add vulgar to this list after last night’s happenings. Now I repeat, I did not see last night’s ballgame. That being said, as soon as I read that blog I did not doubt what they had said. This man is a very bad for the game of baseball. If we all did our jobs as poorly as he does his, we’d be unemployed. No question about it. He needs to be let go. Suspensions and fines will no longer suffice. Bottom line: How is this man still an umpire??

How is he still an umpire, you ask?
U-N-I-O-N.
The players have one and so do the the umpires.
I am aware, thanks. And it’s a joke.
How this guy ever “made it” to the Bigs is beyond me. Normally they have to take the cream-of-the-crop, just like minor-league ballplayers. He is terrible. Enough complaints, rants, letters, etc…and you’d figure they’d have to work on something to get this guy out of meaningful MLB games. Anything! Ok, I am done venting. He’s a chump.
The play unfolded fairly normally, but Hernandez was just a total ass. Delgado snagged a low liner before it hit the ground. Initially, from the TV camera angle, it was hard to tell whether Delgado caught on the fly. Realizing it might be a tough call, Delgado looked at Hernandez (who was the 1B ump) to get the official ruling and see if he had to jog over to the bag and step on it. Seems like routine stuff right? Well Hernandez just kind of stared at Delgado for a second, and then lazily pointed to his right, as if to simply indicate fair ball. He made no out signal. Delgado held the ball up and showed it to him. Still nothing. Realizing the play (and inning) were over, the runner jogged back to the dugout, at which time Delgado had some words for Hernandez which obviously a TV viewer couldn’t make out. It seemed like something along the lines of “you’ve gotta make a call, man”. And that brings us to where we were in the “Pick me up some Mets” story.
Thanks for sharing this story. As I watched the game I was wondering if anyone was going to make an issue of it. I e mailed a few people in MLB asking if umpires were subject to fines and suspension as a result of their inappropriate actions but have yet to get a reply. I will keep waiting and post any response here. I really hope the issue doesn’t go away. I realize the umpires have a union but they also need to police themselves so they all don’t get a bad rap because of this bad apple.
Horrific umpires are IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of, MLB has let the Umpire union (headed by another terrible ex umpire Richie Phillips) make this union virtually bullet proof.
As further proof that bad umpires will not be fired, Dale Ford ump’d for 20+ years in 70’s and 80’s and blew calls especially behind home plate, he had a terrible attitude with players, his strike zone moved on every pitch as well and he would toss anyone whom dared to say much to him regarding his butchery. he was not much better on the basepaths as well.
This is one union that needs to be busted.
I for one was very happy several years ago when the “scabs” were doing the umpireing and the union was on strike in the hopes of getting rid of the entire lot of these jerks.
I have to agree with all of you. The umpires are out of control. It’s as if there are three teams on the field of play with one hellbent on beating the other two at the same time.
If the union and or the commissioner of baseball won’t address this issue, sooner or later the players will.
And when that happens, all of baseball will be to blame.
