Peavy Wants Padres to Sign Lofton

Padres ace Jake Peavy is campaigning to get Kenny Lofton on his team. As per Tim Sullivan at the San Diego Union-Tribune, Peavy made a pitch for Lofton’s services, in the hopes that Padres’ management would sign the ancient outfielder. Said Peavy on the topic, “I like Kenny. I think he’d bring a dimension to this ballclub that we don’t have any of — we have no team speed. It’s not my call. It’s not my decision. But he’d definitely be a spark.”

It is true that the Padres lack team speed. I mean, they are currently hitting Brian Giles leadoff! Even at 40 years of age, Lofton would bring some much-needed assets to the club. However, it doesn’t seem like GM Kevin Towers is on board with Peavy’s idea. Said Towers, “I would say if there are moves to be made in the next couple of weeks, they’ll probably be from within. My eyes are more on the Portland team.” So it seems like the unemployed Lofton will be without a job for at least a bit longer…
