Brewers Designate Derrick Turnbow for Assignment
UPDATE: (5/2) 11:18am (EST) - As per the AP via Yahoo Sports!, the Brewers have designated Turnbow for assignment. The team has recalled OF Joe Dillon from Triple-A Nashville to take his place on the roster.
May 1, 8:08pm (EST) - According to Tom Haudricourt at the Milwauke Journal Sentinel, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin is thinking over what exactly he wants to do with struggling reliever Derrick Turnbow. Said Melvin on the subject, “What do you want me to do, make a move today, right now? If we make a move, we’ll let you know. It’s not fair to Derrick Turnbow to tell the media what we’re doing before we talk to Derrick Turnbow, on anything. If there’s any move we’ll let you know. We’ve got to look at how the club is and see if we can fix a spot here or there.”
Turnbow is out of options, and would have to clear waivers to be sent to the minors. Haudricourt also notes that Turnbow could refuse an outright designation for assignment, but in order to do so, he would need to be willing to forfeit his $3.2 million salary for 2008. Considering how terrible he has pitched this season (0-1, 15.63 ERA), there is a real small chance a team would claim him off of waivers. But reading Melvin’s words, we can expect a decision on Turnbow very soon. Stay tuned…

Another overpaid and infective middle reliever. When are teams going to lear to stop giving these to pitchers like him, Tavarez, Linebrink etc..? The insanity has to stop.
It is amazing. It seems like every year the most effective middle relievers are guys most of us had never heard of before that season. There just isn’t a such thing as an “elite” middle relief talent. The ones who are become closers and the rest see a good two or three seasons at best, usually during their arbitration years, and then fade away while they cash in their FA paychecks.
Very good point, Meddler. Middle relief is so touch and feel. That’s why given huge contracts to certain pitchers with a track record in that role is dangerous. They log so many innings, they fall off a cliff. It’s seldom a gradual decline with these guys.
Now that Turnbow’s DFA is official and that a small market team has chosen to eat a fairly large middle reliever’s sizeable contract, when will larger market teams like the Sox choose to do the same with similar failures such as Julian Tavarez?
