Buchholz Hits DL

The Boston Red Sox have placed starting pitcher Clay Buchholz on the 15-day DL due to a broken finger nail. The move is retroactive to May 13th. Justin Masterson is expected to get the call to make the spot start this coming weekend.

This isn’t the worst thing in the world for Boston.  The 23-year old has an innings limit of about 180 this season, as reported here, so some time off here and there could be beneficial down the stretch.  Plus, he’s been pretty awful of late.

  1. Was it a broken fingernail or did it come off? I’ve heard both reports.

It could be that he got bad because of the fingernail issue. Remember Wang had a lot of trouble when his fingernail got messed up last year. It may affect his big curve ball, and if he has to lay off that pitch his others aren’t as effective.

Another thing is he tends to pitch “backwards”. Curves first then fastball. The league catches on to things like that pretty quick.
