ESPN’s Buster Olney has a few interesting tidbits in his blog today. Here’s a rundown:
It’s pure speculation, but Olney sees a potential fit between the Indians and Rockies, involving Garrett Atkins. Of course, it should take a bit more time before the Rockies even consider trading off veterans like “The Diet.” But if the Rox do […]

MLB.com is reporting that the Florida Marlins and San Diego Padres are interested in recently released outfielder Jacque Jones.
Jones, who was recently DFA’d by Detroit, got off to a slow start with the Tigers, batting .165 (13-for-79) with just one home run, one triple, two doubles and five RBIs. He has a less than stellar career OBP of .327, […]

John Paul Morosi of The Detroit Free Press reports that the Tigers have cut outfielder Jacque Jones. And for good reason. Jones hit just .165 in 24 games as the team’s left-fielder. He’ll be replaced on the roster by Matt Joyce, who hit .299 with five home runs and 21 RBIs at Triple-A Toledo.
In a curious move, however, Gary […]

In a USA Today column, Gary Thorne puts into writing what many of us have been thinking for a few weeks now. Could free agent Barry Bonds* replace the struggling Gary Sheffield* in the Tigers lineup if Sheffield’s woes continue?
Remember, current Tigers manager Jim Leyland was instrumental in the development of Bonds* when the then […]

In more Tigers’ news, Detroit has announced that Miguel Cabrera will begin playing 1st base on a regular basis. This move shifts Carlos Guillen to 3rd base. Since Miggy has already signed a long-term deal, getting his cheddar, I’m sure such a move will not be too bothersome for him.
That didn’t take long, did it? It […]

The offense has begun coming around of late, and Curtis Granderson is set to return to Detroit to offer an additional boost. He should be activated either today or tomorrow barring any unforeseen circumstances. Granderson went 1-3 in a single-A ballgame last night, his […]

The 2008 payrolls were released earlier this month by Major League Baseball, and there were a few surprises. What isn’t much of a surprise is that the New York Yankees were once again #1 on that list, topping $209 million (yet another payroll record).
Of interest though is that both the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets have leap-froged the […]

Kind of surprising here. He’s a guy that can eat some innings, and considering most team’s bullpen woes (Detroit, perhaps?), it’s odd that he passed through. He is making $835,000 this year.
